Welcome to Kiwitag

Welcome

On behalf of Auckland/New Zealand Kiwitag Incorporated I would like to welcome you to our interim upgraded website for the game of tag football in New Zealand. We are currently in the process of working towards a more updated website in the near future that will unable all our key tag personal to access and utilize, edit and update data from anywhere in the country with a content management system.

Tag football in New Zealand is still in its development stages and continues to grow at a very fast rate with modules starting up in new provinces such as Bay of Plenty, Northland, Central North Island and Nelson.

Tag Football has been in New Zealand since the early 90’s and is only now beginning to develop and grow to its true potential. Since taking the reigns in 1999 we have seen a quantum leap in playing numbers and module numbers nationally with our annual regional tournament’s growing in strength each year.

This season promises to be another big year with the 1st Inaugural Nationals Tournament to be held at Owen Delany Park, Taupo February 22, 23 2008. It is a culmination of the many years of hard work by many volunteers who have come and gone over the past 7 years who have dedicated there own time to help get the game to where it is today.

Today, we still rely heavily on volunteers to keep this game alive, without them we would have nothing. A huge thanks goes out to all the coordinators of each module throughout the country who are administering their tournaments and wish them all the luck for the up coming season.

Good luck to you all this season and have a go.

New Zealand Kiwitag Football and SAS Sports Apparel Limited become a Tag Team!

Auckland/New Zealand Kiwitag Incorporated wish to proudly announce SAS Sports Apparel Limited as the official brand supplier for tag football in New Zealand for the next 3 years. Managing Director of SAS Tim Connelly has played an integral part in the evolution of our game since our first meeting with him before our Trans Tasman series with Australia back in 2005.

Our first meeting best sums up Tim’s integrity, when Tim decided to support our Association by producing our playing gear for our 10 New Zealand Sides in the first year against Oztag Australia without even a deposit from our Association. This was a risk he was willing to make as he believed in our fledging sport and still does to this day which was evident with the excellent uniforms produced for the Tag World Cup played earlier this year.

SAS will be the official suppliers for the Inaugural Nationals Tag tournament in Taupo later this year as all teams competing at the tournament will be wearing the SAS brand.

Cheers Tim, I’m sure this will become a long and prosperous relationship for SAS and the game of tag. A special shout out goes out to Lynley Tierney who has been the backbone of the production of all the SAS gear we have had produced in the past and wish to extend a huge high 5 for all her patients and effort in making our tag people look great! Love your work Lynley!,  because theres a lot more on the horizon coming your way!

Tag Time in Taupo! Here we come!

Yes!, That’s right people Tag is coming to Taupo! This has been a project that has come about sooner than we had forecast. With the sudden growth of tag football nationally it was only fitting that we would host an event of this kind to cater to the tag community throughout the country who have been screaming out for something like this for a very long time. It will the 1st tournament of its kind and promises to be an awesome event to be part of.

Teams from Northland right through to Otago will be present as it will provide an excellent platform to see our games strength in all the 7 age groups. It will also gives an opportunity to gauge the strength of our game on a national basis and gives us the opportunity to further develop the game at grass roots level and internationally.
The Taupo City Council and local community have been gracious enough to get behind our sport and have laid out the red carpet for our game by providing world class facilities for our 2 day event at Owen Delany Park Stadium in Taupo on February 22 and 23 2008.

We wish to extend our thanks and gratitude to Warwick Hall from the Taupo City Council for giving us this opportunity to make this tournament a reality. The Phoenix Rugby League Club led by Tracey Livingstone will provide the ‘on the ground support’ when the tournament takes place so we can rest assure our game will be in good hands. Big ups to you Tracey and the Phoenix crew!

World Cup Success for our teams!

Earlier this year we hosted the Inaugural World Cup Tag tournament at Fowlds Park, Mt Albert, Auckland, which by all the feedback was a resounding success. The tournament was played over 3 days with teams represented from all the major pacific island nations, Australia and Lebanon. We also were honoured to have teams representing the New Zealand Maori and Australian Aboriginals respectively.

The tournament was played in great spirits with all the New Zealand Teams performing with distinction. For the first time too, Tag football was televised on Sky Sport TV with the Open Mens, Mixed and Over 30’s finals, and semis broadcast as 1 hour highlights packages on Sky 1,2 and 3. This proved to be a huge success in lifting the profile of our sport and giving it a much needed boost in playing numbers for the up coming season.
The Final of the Over 35’s Mens and Open Mixed Final were our two biggest successes with victories in both finals with the Todd Price and Darrell Rolleston led New Zealand 35’s and George Tanirau led New Zealand Barbarians Mixed teams becoming World Champions. Our Gary Bauer coached open mens team were very unlucky to win their final with a closely fought final with Australia. The Richard O’Connell led over 30’s mens team too were very competitive in there final but were pipped at the post by Australia as well.

The New Zealand Over 40’s 45’s Mens teams and Womans Open and Over 30’s womans team played Australia in a 5 test format and were all unlucky in their quest for trans tasman supremacy. Our Over 40’s mens team led by Sam Panapa were very unlucky to take the 5th test and lost the series 2-3 to Australia in a nail biting series.

All in all, the weekend was highly successful with everyone from players, coaches, supporters administrators and volunteers enjoying themselves. Special goes out to all the coaches and managers who ensured all the teams were prepared and conditioned for the tournament.
